Albert van der Naillen (Overboelare [Grammont] 1830 - Oakland 1928)
    Auteur, scientifique et éducateur, Chevalier de l'Ordre de Léopold (reçu en 1903 pour les service rendu à la nation dans les liens commerciaux et l'image de la Belgique donné aux Etats-Unis), Membre de la California Academy of Sciences, Président de la School of Engineering de San Fransisco, Membre fondateur de l'Institut Général Psychologique de Paris, Ancien Président de la California Psychical Research Society, Membre de l'American Association for the Advandement of Sciences, Membre de la California Academy of Sciences, Membre de la National Geography Society. Né en Belgique, il émigre en 1859 avec sa femme (ils se sont mariés en 1857) et son fils sur le Mascononau qui part d'Anvers, il est alors noté comme fermier (farmer) dans les registres de l'immigration. Il eut plusieurs enfants de son épouse Victoria (né Herladeberpen, 1835-1920) :
 - Albert Victor Joseph, Jr. (né à Overboelare en 1858, épouse Lillian Kramer de San Francisco en 1887), ont une fille Jeanne Lucy (1889-1954). Il fit un voyage dans le Diamond avec le Capitaine Van Tassel, le plus grand ballon construit à la côte pacfique. Il meurt en 1968 à Alameda.
 - Edward Edmund Herla (1892-1961), épouse Edith May Simpson (1881-1966), il participera aux livres de son père The great Message
 - Ralph Leo (1874-1925, épouse en 1896 Pauline E. Schlueter), également féru d'occultisme, il fit les premières expériences en 1896 de rayon X en Californie. Son nom devient Vander Nelly ou Vander Nellen
 - Mary ou Maria (1865-?),
 - Lucy (1864-1926, épouse en 1884 John Loupy), 
 - Gasparine (connue sous le pseudonyme de Rena, 1885-1945, épouse d'abord Alexander G. Brockoff en 1902, puis Eugene Steve Campomenosi (1889-1981), plus tard abrégé en Campi)
 - Dorathy ou Dorothy Cecelia (1888-1964, épouse James C. Rosemeyer)
 - Charlotte Therese C. (1878-1942, épouse Eugene H. Kast en 1898 (?), puis Joseph Bullock)

    Il habita San Fransisco puis Oakland en Californie (Etats-Unis, où il fut chargé notamment de tracer une ligne de chemin de fer). Il y sera très tôt en contact avec le médium Mr. Miller (né à Nancy et habitant à San Fransisco). Il porte parfois le titre de baron, plus souvent de Professor. Il sera naturalisé américain.

    Albert et Victoria sont enterrés au Saint Marys Cemetery à Oakland (Calofornie). Edmund est enterré au Mountain View Cemetery (également à Oakland). D'autres enfants dans le Comté de San Mateo (à San Mateo ou Colma, également en Californie).

    Théosophe et spirite, convaincu de la réincarnation, il a écrit sur des sujets spirituels divers, notamment les guérisons et les révélations divines dans le monde :

In 1921 two of his sons, Ralph and Edward, visited the ancient Maya Indians of Mexico. They brought back messages to the world from ancient masters of old religions in America. The title of one of the communications was "A Message to Mankind from the Master in Cabala". It is very curious to note that these messages about the Cabala are very similar to the views of the ancient Egytians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, ans Rosicrucian.

    In this connection, it is of still deeper significance that Mr. Edward Van der Naillen, of Oakland, California, while looking after some of his mining interests in the Mexican State of Sinaloa, not long ago, is said to have come into a personal acquaintance with one of the Teachers of spiritual wisdom, a great "Healer", as well as profound "Miracle Man" among the Mayas who still inhabit that land of their ancient greatness.

    This man is said to be more than 100 years old, and is revered by his people as one to whom the Spiritual Life is an open book wherein he sees the records of all their lives, and is able to prophesy, with unerring accuray, the events of their future. They know him as "Marcel Vega"; and at certain intervals of time he meets with those of his "children" who seek his guidance and help.
    That, however, which the world of today will regard as most wonderful, is the fact that his Spiritual Teaching, as far as Mr. Van der Naillen has endeavored to express it, is in essence, identical with the Morality and Spirituality taught by Natural Science. Experiment Made by Prof. Van De Naillen, of San Francisco.

    Prof. Albert Van de Naillen and his son, well-known local electrical investigators, gave some remarkable exhibitions of wireless telegraphy in San Francisco. Van de Naillen, the older, returned from Europe about two months ago with information obtained from Lieut. Della Riccia and Sig. Maiconi, of the Italian engineering corps, and since then he has been preparing apparatus for the tests.
    One part of the instrument was set up on the roof of a building near the corner of Mason and Eddy streets and the other part in Market street, several hundred feet away. The results were startling. Message after message was rattled off, each dash and dot being sharply enunciated by a diminutive sounder.
    Once during a previous experiment a striking occurrence was noted. When several tests had been applied, and the day's work ended suddenly the receiving sounder began clicking rapidly as if an experienced band was manipulating the sending key. But there was no one at the sending key. A telegraphic expert present made out plainly the word "repeat" at the end of the message, then the sounder became mute. Several solutions have been offered, but Van de Naillen believes others are experimenting in the same lines as he, and that his receiver happened to be placed just in the right position to catch the message as it flew through space.

    Une fois au cours d'une expérience précédente, on a noté un phénomène frappant. Lorsque plusieurs tests ont été effectués et que le travail de la journée s'est soudainement terminé, le sondeur de réception a commencé à cliquer rapidement comme si une bande expérimentée manipulait la touche d'envoi. Mais il n'y avait personne à la clé d'envoi. Un télégraphiste présent a clairement prononcé le mot "répéter" à la fin du message, puis le sondeur est devenu muet. Plusieurs solutions ont été proposées, mais Van de Naillen pense que d'autres expérimentent dans le même sens que lui et que son récepteur a été placé juste à la bonne position pour capter le message lors de son passage dans l'espace.

The A. vander Naillen School of Practical Engineering, 51st Street and Telegraph Ave, Oakland, 1864-1917

issue de la brochure Van Der Naillen School of Engineering qui donne un aperçu des formations.

    Dans Architect and engineer (1905), on lit qu'il établit un engineering school à Pittsburgh qu'il déménagea ensuite à Chicago (bâtiment détruit par l'incendit de la ville en 1871). En 1874, il séjourne à San Francisco et reforme son école à Oakland. Différents encarts publicitaires informent les changement d'adresses : on trouve un principal Institute Civil Engineering, 461 Ninth, res cor 3d av and Sumner, Temescal (un des plus anciens quartiers d'Oakland) en 1876-77. à partir de 1898, l'adresse d'une School of Practical Mining, Civil, Mechanical and Electrisa Engineering est 933 Market St. à San Francisco. Celle-ci déménage, et se trouve, en 1904, 113 Fulton St. à San Francisco. 
    Un des élèves de l'école, William Townley MacDonald. est référencé par le Twentieth century successful Americans.

    Kenneth Morris leur consacre un poème en l’honneur de leur anniversaire de mariage de diamant, le 10 octobre 1917 publié dans The Theosophical Path vol. XIV N°1, January 1918 (p.78)

     Ses livres sont repris dans les catalogues de la littérature théosophique (par exemple Teapot philosophy, Catalogue Of The Adyar Library, The Theosophical quarterly, Studies In Vedanta). Il écrit l’introduction au livre de Clara Iza Price (Mrs. Clara Iza Price Tibbetts von Ravn), The Scribe of a Soul (1901). Il était donc très certainement théosophe, pour sûr il croyait en la continuation de la vie après la mort ("I am absolutely certain of the continuation of life after terrestrial death“ (Theosophist, July 1906, Vol.27, p.750).

     On sait qu'il assista à des séances spirites.

    His answer was:
    "Yes. Faith comes through experience."
    Q.- Should a young man join a church?
    A.- He sould have a religion, remain true to it, and practice it with all sincerity.
    Q.- What is the rule for long life and happiness?
    A.- In all that you do, keep in touch with the higher Power. Ask yourself if God will approve and have faith in his approval. That embodies the theory of life and os a certain guide to morality.
    Q.- Should we help others?
    A.- Never thrust anything on a man. It is not right to take a fellow being out of the gutter unless he reaches out a hand or expresses a desire for help. What we do, we must do free, all of us.
    Q.- Does a faith prayer bring material blessings?
    A.- Yes, if the motive for possession is right.
