Mrs. Nucci, adepte de Monaco

    “Who is this Mrs. Nucci ?”
    “She is the wife of a musician who plays in the Orchestra of Monte Carlo. She has herself been healed by Mr. Antoine after having been declared incurable by the Doctors. She went to Belgium to thank Mr. Antoine personally for having been healed by him and since then I think she has been healing the sick herself. She simply writes the name of the patient, sends it to Mr. Antoine and asks him to heal them. There are hundreds of people here in Monaco who have been healed by her through Mr. Antoine.”
    The Colonel looked at me with an inquiring gaze of astonishment. Continuing his questioning he asked, “Where does this Mrs. Nucci live? Will we be able to see her?”
    “Certainly. She receives everybody and will be glad, I am sure, to see you. She lives in the villa Montplaisir, Boulevard de L'Ouest here in Monaco. About ten minutes walk.”
    “I know where it is,” volunteered the Customhouse Officer, “and I will be glad to pilot you thither.”
    And to the Boulevard de L'Ouest we went following our volunteer guide.
    We soon found the Villa Montplaisir, a very simple little Villa. We ascended two stories and saw a name "Nucci" on the door. We knocked, a little girl opened, and upon our demand to see Mrs. Nucci she led us to the front room. A portly lady of about 40, short in statue, with healthy rosy cheeks and black hair, came to us with a very sympathetic smile. We asked her whether she was Mrs. Nucci. She answered in the affirmative and very amiably requested us to be seated, advancing a chair toward us and pointing also to a sofa near by.
    “Mrs. Nucci, we have just learned through one of your patients very much benefitted indeed by your treatment, that you have remarkable healing powers, and have brought to pass many cures in Monaco.”
    “I must beg your pardon, Gentlemen,” she answered with much earnestness while sweetly smiling, “I have no healing powers whatsoever myself. When sick people come to me I simply take their names, tell them to have full faith in Mr. Antoine, and that he will surely heal them. I write those names to Mr. Antoine, he receives the letters, works for these sick people, and if they deserve to be healed if they have the faith their healing quickly follows according to their merits.”
    “How did you come to know Mr. Antoine?”
    “I was very ill myself for many years. The doctors had vainly tried to help me. There were interior ulcers around my heart, and once or twice a week the doctors forced instruments into my chest to allow the pus matter to run out. I suffered untold agonies. A lady from Monaco, who is actually the Secretary of Mr. Antoine [Juliette Vittard], spoke to me about him-saying if I would have faith in his powers he would surely heal me. She named several persons here from Monaco who had been healed by him of reputed incurable diseases. I believed the lady knew of those healings in Monaco, and a sudden faith in Mr. Antoine's powers took possession of my whole being. The lady now his secretary, wrote to Mr. Antoine and within a week my pains left me; in two weeks I felt much better, and in one month I was entirely well, my appetite had returned and consequently my bodily strength. I have never felt any pains since and I repeat with infinite thankfulness, my cure was entirely due to Mr. Antoine, for I had forsaken the use of any kind of medicine from the moment my name was sent to the healer.”
    “This is really extraordinary,” I replied. “But how did you come to be a healer yourself—for people believe that you have the same healing powers?”
    “This is a mistake gentlemen. As I stated before, I have no healing powers myself. I only invoke the aid of the Master. I seem to draw strength from him and transmit it to the patients. I am simply an intermediary.”
    While we were thus entertained by Mrs. Nucci we had been interrupted several times by persons coming into the room, some sick desiring her to write to Mr. Antoine in their behalf and others came expressly with joyous countenance, to thank her for the complete healing of themselves or of their children. To the sick persons, Mrs. Nucci invariably told them to have faith and that they would soon be well—she would write to the Master that very night.
    We took leave of the good lady taking with us the decided impression that she was an honest, benevolent, tender-hearted, whole souled, and very truthful person.

    I took lunch with the Nucci's, got acquainted with a little sister of Madeleine [fille de Mrs. Nucci], and soon there entered Mr. Nucci, the husband and father. He just came from his daily morning rehearsal of the Casino's Orchestra. He plays the first bass viol. He was a striking personality, tall, slim, large black restless eyes, black hair, a true bundle of ever vibrating Italian nerves. He showed real politeness. In all, a sympathetic, attractive figure, was this husband of Mr. Antoine's favorite Apostle.
    I went nearly every afternoon, as I had become very interested in her work. I wanted to see more of it before arriving at my conclusion. It was all so strange—so fabulous—almost legendary.

    The Husband of Mrs. Nucci played in the orchestra of Monte Carlo, the most aristocratic gambling place in all Europe, during the winter season, and in the orchestra of Vichy, the aristocratic summer resort, with its wonderful springs in Central France, during the summer months.
    He generally leaves Monte Carlo for Vichy in the beginning of May. The year I was in Monaco Mrs. Nucci decided to pass thru Belgium on her way to the summer season at Vichy, to go and give thanks to the Master Antoine, in the name of all the sick people he had healed upon the intercession of Mrs. Nucci.

    "Certainement. Elle reçoit tout le monde et sera heureuse, j'en suis sûr, de vous voir. Elle vit dans la villa Montplaisir, Boulevard de L'Ouest, ici à Monaco. Environ dix minutes de marche."
    "Je sais où il est," se proposa l'officier des douanes, "et je serai heureux de vous y conduire."
    Et jusqu'au boulevard de l'Ouest, nous sommes allés suivre notre guide bénévole.
    Nous avons rapidement trouvé la Villa Montplaisir, une petite villa très simple. Nous sommes montés sur deux étages et avons vu un nom "Nucci" sur la porte. Nous avons frappé, une petite fille ouvrit et, à notre demande de voir Mme Nucci, elle nous a conduits à la salle d'entrée. Une dame corpulente d'environ 40 ans, courte en statue, aux joues roses et aux cheveux noirs, est venue nous voir avec un sourire très sympathique. Nous lui avons demandé si elle était Mme Nucci. Elle répondit par l'affirmative et nous demanda très aimablement de nous asseoir, en avançant une chaise vers nous et en montrant aussi du doigt un canapé à proximité.
    "Mme Nucci, nous venons d'apprendre par l'un de vos patients que votre traitement a été très bénéfique, que vous avez des pouvoirs curatifs remarquables et que vous avez fait passer de nombreux traitements à Monaco."
    "Je dois vous demander pardon, messieurs, répondit-elle avec beaucoup de sérieux tout en souriant doucement, je n'ai moi-même aucun pouvoir de guérison. Quand des malades viennent me voir, je prends simplement leur nom, je leur dis d'avoir pleinement confiance en M. Antoine, et qu'il va sûrement les guérir. J'écris ces noms à M. Antoine, il reçoit les lettres, travaille pour ces malades, et s'ils méritent d'être guéris, s'ils ont la foi, leur guérison suit rapidement selon leurs mérites."
    "Comment avez-vous connu M. Antoine ?"
    "J'ai été moi-même très malade pendant de nombreuses années. Les médecins avaient vainement essayé de m'aider. Il y avait des ulcères intérieurs autour de mon cœur, et une ou deux fois par semaine, les médecins me forçaient la poitrine avec des instruments pour que le pus s'écoule. J'ai souffert d'innombrables souffrances. Une dame de Monaco, qui est en fait le secrétaire de M. Antoine, m'a parlé de lui – disant que si j'avais confiance en ses pouvoirs, il me guérirait sûrement. Elle a nommé ici plusieurs personnes de Monaco qui avaient été guéries par lui de maladies incurables réputées. Je croyais que la dame connaissaît ces guérisons à Monaco, et une foi soudaine dans les pouvoirs de M. Antoine a pris possession de tout mon être. La dame qui est maintenant sa secrétaire, écrivit à M. Antoine et en une semaine mes douleurs me quittèrent ; en deux semaines je me sentais beaucoup mieux, et en un mois je me sentais tout à fait bien, mon appétit était revenu et donc ma force physique. Je n'ai jamais ressenti de douleurs depuis et je répète avec une infinie reconnaissance, ma guérison était entièrement due à M. Antoine, car j'avais abandonné l'usage de tout médicament depuis le moment où mon nom a été envoyé au guérisseur."
    "C'est vraiment extraordinaire", lui ai-je répondu. "Mais comment êtes-vous devenu vous-même guérisseur, car les gens croient que vous avez les mêmes pouvoirs de guérison ?"
    "C'est une erreur, messieurs. Comme je l'ai déjà dit, je n'ai moi-même aucun pouvoir de guérison. Je n'invoque que l'aide du Maître. J'ai l'impression de puiser des forces en lui et de les transmettre aux patients. Je ne suis qu'un intermédiaire."
    Alors que nous étions ainsi divertis par Mme Nucci, nous avions été interrompus à plusieurs reprises par des personnes entrant dans la salle, certaines malades désirant qu'elle écrive à M. Antoine en leur nom et d'autres venaient expressément avec un visage joyeux, pour la remercier de la guérison complète d'eux-mêmes ou de leurs enfants. Aux malades, Mme Nucci leur disait invariablement d'avoir la foi et qu'ils seraient bientôt en bonne santé – elle écrirait au Maître le soir même.
    Nous avons pris congé de la bonne dame en emportant avec nous l'impression décidée qu'elle était une personne honnête, bienveillante, tendre de cœur, d'âme entière et très sincère.

    J'ai déjeuné avec les Nucci, j'ai fait la connaissance d'une petite sœur de Madeleine, et très vite M. Nucci, le mari et le père, est entré. Il revient tout juste de sa répétition matinale quotidienne de l'orchestre du Casino. Il joue de la première basse de viole. C'était une personnalité frappante, grand, mince, de grands yeux noirs agités, des cheveux noirs, un vrai paquet de nerfs italiens toujours vibrants. Il a fait preuve d'une grande politesse. Au total, un personnage sympathique et séduisant, c'était le mari de l'apôtre préféré de M. Antoine.
    J'y allais presque tous les après-midi, car je m'intéressais beaucoup à son travail. Je voulais en voir plus avant d'en arriver à ma conclusion. C'était si étrange, si fabuleux, presque légendaires.

    Le mari de Mme Nucci jouait dans l'orchestre de Monte-Carlo, la place de jeu la plus aristocratique d'Europe, pendant la saison d'hiver, et dans l'orchestre de Vichy, la station d'été aristocratique, avec ses magnifiques sources du centre de la France, pendant l'été.
    Il quitte généralement Monte-Carlo pour Vichy début mai. L'année où j'étais à Monaco, Mme Nucci décida de passer par la Belgique pour se rendre à la saison d'été à Vichy, pour aller remercier le Maître Antoine, au nom de tous les malades qu'il avait guéris par l'intercession de Mme Nucci.

    Voilà ce qu'on apprend par le récit d'Albert van der Naillen dans son petit livre Most sacred revelations given to the world by Antoine the wonderful Belgian healer (1927). Dans les annuaires de la Principauté de Monaco, on trouve différentes références à des Nucci, notamment un musicien et une Joséphine, au 26, rue Grimaldi, sans pouvoir dire de qui il s'agit :

    Having propounded all these questions to dear Mrs. Nucci, many of them pussling her in the extreme, she handed me twelve little booklets, a year's monthly publication of MR. Antoine's teachings bearing the title of "L'Oreole de la Conscience." "The Aura of Our Conscience." I took the little

books home and commenced to study them. At first I was a little disappointed? The literary style was so different from any works I had perused on similar subjects, in fact there seemed to be no literary style or pretense to any literary merits at all, in the exposition of the philosophical and moral truths these booklets were intended to reveal. However, as the suject treated therein was of the utmost importance I buckled to the task, and soon found myself rewarded by the discovery that these insignificant loking little yellow covered pamphlets were simply a collection of precious moral jewels, to those who could read between the lines, ponder and reflect. And after having perused these booklets, pondering over their contents, reflecting on the importance of their teachings, I found myself meditating and reaching the following conclusions. The main Moral Jewels found in the booklets are the following:
    "Yes, for twenty centuries, and perhaps many centuries before that time, the world has been proclaiming those great and sacred moral precepts 'Love ye one another,' and 'Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.' And still, after this immense lapse of time, during all these centuries that have seen these precepts preached, we are forced to the sad conclusion, that we do not 'Love our Neighbor,' that our Neighbor does not Love us, and moreover, that we constantly do unto others that wich we would not wish others to do unto us."
    "Why is this?" we asked in great earnestness.

Then we remembered these very teachings that were given in the churches, temples, and mosques, in a monotonous voice, week after week, without enthusiasm, as the fulfilment of a mere duty - simply giving out these great moral precepts, as a cold matter of fact implying that their mere utterance was simply to convince the world of their sublime truths, that humanity would bow to them in obedience and thus bring the millenium upon earth with ease, without worry, and without exertion.
    Now, this would all have been very well, if there had been no antagonism in the field whose deepest interest lay in preventing the putting into actual practice of the sublime truths. But this antagonist was there and is there today, more powerful than ever in the past, and keeps us in his claws, and that antagonist is none other than ourselves, our animal selves, the beast within us, as Mrs. Stern of Paris so tersely states in one of her beautiful books.
    The sublime and moral truths above referred to are appreciated to their full value by our higher self, by the angel within us ; but it is to our material body that is given the tasl to put into practice in our daily lives, these sublime truths. It refuses, however, to obey the command of our higher self, it being to the interest of our body, the beast, to oppose this command in order to be able to satisfy its earthly passions, gratify its lower senses, and this cannot be done by obeying the command of the Angel within us. The Angel command is to apply the sublime moral truths cited above to our every

day life, to conform our every act to their precepts.
    It fact, our whole live consist in a battle, more or less earnest, more or less sincere, according to the greaer or less dregree os advancement of every individual man - yes, a battle between the Angel within us who points upward, and the beast, large or small which every one of us conceals within his breast, whose constant endeavors are to pull us earthward, downward.
    The inestimable merit of the doctrine of Mr. Antoine, as revealed in the booklets, consists mainly in giving a complete analysis, in laying bare the wiles and stratagems of our lower self for conquest, and on the other hand, in indicating most practically, - although in a deeply philosophical way, the many moral and spiritual means we have on hand always to help us overcome our ennemy ; and Antoine is unique at indicating in detail and in the most practical manner, the way we should call these helps and means to our assistance in evolving our daily spiritual lives.
             "La Foi"  Faith
    "Faith is the greatest remedy for man's ills" he says.
    The inscription on the front page of his booklets commence thus:
    "The only remedy which can heal humanity is Faith," and from perusing his instructions, I should surmise, that he means the healing of moral and spiritual sickness as well as the illnesses of the human body.
    FAITH in God and Faith in Antoine and his

powers seems to be the absolute essential for obtaining a cure.
    Faith, seems to build the only bridge upon which he can approach he sick: a fluidic link between the healer and his patient. The stronger the Faith, the easier and the closer he can approach the sufferer, form a spiritual diagnosis of his case and direct the true spiritual force and to heal him - the absolute confidence and certitude in the sufferer that only Mr. Antoine not only can but will heal him is the nearest approach to and is conducive to that Faith which lies yet deeper in the human soul.
    "FAITH," says the Master, "Is an experience acquired by belief. Any one possessing this Faith controls the future - and instinctively walks life's true path guided solely by the influences of his higher conscience."
    "Faith," in its true sens or understanding deals only with the moral laws and their faithful and unceasing application to daily practice in our lives.
    "FAITH," misunderstood or blind faith, imagines somewhere a land os eternal bliss, and it is in the hope of attaining this land of bliss that one mutters long prayers and orations
.   "Our FAITH is proven by our virtue alone."
    "FAITH is a power acquired by experience. It enlightens us in all that is in the universe. Through Faith we may inderstand spiritual things, and our thought may feel and touch them as our hand deels and touches a material body.
    "Moral endeavors gradually brings us to FAITH." FAITH, as announced by Antoine is an unbounded

faith in a universal Provindence, a loving, guiding influence ever tending to direct man in the true paths of live, an unseen but always active ure within man to elevate himself through the steady practice of the moral law, to be standard of spirituality always growing in power, as he gradually abandons purely material activities. Man may thus attain to that elevation of Spirit where all is hamorny within, where all is hamorny whiout, harmony with God and all existences in the Universe. This supreme Harmony is presided over with and by
             LOVE by MORAL LAW
    "LOVE IS GOD," says Antoine.
    GOD being everywhere, love is everywhere manifest. It exists in all creations from the minutest atomic existence to God Himself. To be in harmony with that love is or duty, our destiny. All existences, through the ever active urge of Supreme Providence, live in harmony with this love. Man alone, being endowed with a free will, may disregard this inner urge of Providence and live a life of inharmony by disobeying the dictates of moral law. The man who obeys these moral laws and lovingly puts them into practice in his every day life, is in harmony with God, with his fellow men, with all creations and existences on this planet, and also must be in harmony with the Universe. The soul of this man is healthy, and according to Antoine's Revelations "When the soul is healthy it takes good care of the body it inhabits, and this body may never know illness."

    Putting these into constant practice the precepts of the moral law through love is the gist, the core, the heart of all Mr. Antoine's teachings, as it leads to that greatest of attainments: the formation of a healthy Soul.
    "If we have our doctrines at heart," he proclaims to his followers, "We will never cease comparing its teachings with our acts and see whether they harmonize."
    "Love is obtained only through good actions, good deeds."
    "When Love does not preside at charity, charitable actions only benefit the receiver. It leaves the donor without any merit.
    "When we give without love, the sacred fire is absent."

    This saying of Antoine's brings to memory an incident which struck me forcibly at the time as being an example of the doctrine of the love the Master promulgates.
    I was visiting a very rich gentleman who receives a quantity of letters every morning for assistance. The secretary who opened all these letters communicated the contents to him. He answered briefly in these terms, his words being dry. "Give thirty francs to this one, ten francs to that one, forty to that one."
    One letter was very pathetic. It came from a poor widow with several children, in absolute distress through no fault of her own. The gentleman listened carefully, it is true, but without uttering

a single word of compassion or sympathy, ordered his secretary dryly, "Give her fifty francs."
    How different the feelings that controlled the dry words of the strict business man with those overwhelming the heart of Mrs. Nucci [who intercepted the Master for the sicks] when she enjoyed the many luxuries given her when for an entire week she delighted in the perfume of the cooking and re-cooking of the ox head.

    According to Mr. Antoine, all these gifts, given with a dry heart, bring no benefits to the giver. "Love and compassion must preside over all charities," and they were conspicuously absent in the donations of the above mentioned gentleman.
    When you meet an occasion for Charity, it is absolutely necessary to follow your first impuse," says the Master. "The first impulse is always one of sympathy, which is a derivative of love." The second thought is begotten through a sense of prudence, of caution, lest our charity might be worthlessly bestowed. The charity given after this second thought, is void of love; pridence is prevalent ant takes the place of Sympathy - such charity is no moral to the giver."
    After reading the above sentence and having meditated upon its deep significance I could not help comparing it to our dry business principles its very opposite, but equally true however in its own field of application. It says, "Never let impulse but reason guide your actions." So then the motive power of our actions in life may be entirely antipodal acording to the source orginating them; whether they emanate from our lower self the ma-

terial man, or from our higher self the man spiritual. Both are evidently right in their own particular sphere. Love and spontaneity springing from the heart in one case, prudence and caution emanating from the brain in the second case." But how true and profound these precepts are, and how earnest we must be in the application in our every day life of the first, the higher principle. Charity it not limited to material donations, but to gifts of the spirit such as imparting moral counsel and spiritual advice, divine teachings, and many other activities in the soul realm! "In remaining obedient to the councel of prudence, we gradually become diffident and lose that divine treasure, the sacred fire of LOVE and FAITH," proclaims the Master, for LOVE and FAITH lead man to Light, to illumination. All true knowledge emanates from these two cardinal virtues... Intelligence gives us the knowledge of things material, and to it are due the wonderful manifestations of the industrial and commercial worlds. LOVE and FAITH give us the true anderstanding of things spiritual, the purpose of creation - the role man is assigned to play in it. FAITH lays open before us the ways and means to constantly better ourselves morally. Love and FAITH, united, bring us ever nearer to God, which means ever nearer to Omniscience, to Omnipotence! All knowledge and all power lays the evolution of all men!"
    There exists in the instructions given by Mr. Antoine, a series of precepts, which at first, are

perhaps a little staggering to the man of the world, as this man is today. One os these precepts, also printed on the fronted page of his booklets, reads:
    "FAITH is born of LOVE; that kind of Love which convince us that God dwells in our very ennemies ; hence not loving our ennemies is not loving God ; it is the Love we have for our ennemies that renders us worthy of serving Him ; for that Love is truth in its very essence, for it is purity itself."
    I had been told repeatedly by Mrs. Nucci that Mr. Antoine, before he secluded himself in his temple, had been a simple mechanic, with but a common education, and here he set forth a precept of the highest philosophical and scientic import of recent discovery and accepted only by the higher evolved minds: the Universality of Life, the Immanence of God in all that is -
    It is true that Antoine, in one of his revelations already cited, promulgates: "Faith enlightens all that is. Through FAITH we may understand things spiritual, and our thoughts may feel and touch them as our hands feel and touch a material body." This statement certainly is in full accordence with the sacred scriptures.

Né en Belgique, il émigre en 1859 avec sa femme (ils se sont mariés en 1857) et son fils sur le Mascononau qui part d'Anvers, il est alors noté comme fermier (farmer) dans les registres de l'immigration. Il eut plusieurs enfants de son épouse Victoria (né Herladeberpen, 1835-1920) :
 - Albert Victor Joseph, Jr. (né à Overboelare en 1858, épouse Lillian Kramer de San Francisco en 1887), ont une fille Jeanne Lucy (1889-1954). Il fit un voyage dans le Diamond avec le Capitaine Van Tassel, le plus grand ballon construit à la côte pacfique. Il meurt en 1968 à Alameda.
 - Edward Edmund Herla (1892-1961), épouse Edith May Simpson (1881-1966), il participera aux livres de son père The great Message
 - Ralph Leo (1874-1925, épouse en 1896 Pauline E. Schlueter), également féru d'occultisme, il fit les premières expériences en 1896 de rayon X en Californie. Son nom devient Vander Nelly ou Vander Nellen
 - Mary ou Maria (1865-?),
 - Lucy (1864-1926, épouse en 1884 John Loupy), 
 - Gasparine (connue sous le pseudonyme de Rena, 1885-1945, épouse d'abord Alexander G. Brockoff en 1902, puis Eugene Steve Campomenosi (1889-1981), plus tard abrégé en Campi)
 - Dorathy ou Dorothy Cecelia (1888-1964, épouse James C. Rosemeyer)
 - Charlotte Therese C. (1878-1942, épouse Eugene H. Kast en 1898 (?), puis Joseph Bullock)

    Il habita San Fransisco puis Oakland en Californie (Etats-Unis, où il fut chargé notamment de tracer une ligne de chemin de fer). Il y sera très tôt en contact avec le médium Mr. Miller (né à Nancy et habitant à San Fransisco). Il porte parfois le titre de baron, plus souvent de Professor. Il sera naturalisé américain.

    Albert et Victoria sont enterrés au Saint Marys Cemetery à Oakland (Calofornie). Edmund est enterré au Mountain View Cemetery (également à Oakland). D'autres enfants dans le Comté de San Mateo (à San Mateo ou Colma, également en Californie).

    Théosophe et spirite, convaincu de la réincarnation, il a écrit sur des sujets spirituels divers, notamment les guérisons et les révélations divines dans le monde :

    Le Rosicrucian Digest en 1944, nous dit :
